wild-restaurant

1. Introduction

The wild-restaurant project aims to create a platform that serves as a comprehensive directory of kosher restaurants in the tri-state area. The platform will provide users with the ability to search for kosher restaurants, browse their menus, and view detailed calorie information for each menu item. By leveraging the USDA FoodData database, the platform will ensure accurate and standardized nutritional information, making it a valuable resource for individuals balancing kosher dietary laws with nutritional awareness.

This document outlines the system requirements for the wild-restaurant platform, ensuring clarity and alignment with Shimshon Waknin's vision.

2. System Overview

The wild-restaurant platform will focus on three core functionalities:

  1. A directory of kosher restaurants in the tri-state area.
  2. Automatic mapping of menu items to USDA nutritional data for calorie counts.
  3. User-friendly search and browsing capabilities for restaurants and menus.

The system will be designed to provide a seamless user experience, ensuring that users can quickly find kosher dining options and make informed decisions based on nutritional data.

3. Functional Requirements

  • As a User, I should be able to search for kosher restaurants in the tri-state area.
  • As a User, I should be able to browse the menu of a selected restaurant.
  • As a User, I should be able to view calorie information for each menu item, sourced from the USDA FoodData database.

4. User Personas

4.1 End User

  • Description: Individuals seeking kosher dining options in the tri-state area.
  • Goals:
    • Find kosher restaurants nearby.
    • Browse menus and make informed dining choices based on calorie information.
  • Pain Points:
    • Difficulty finding kosher restaurants with nutritional transparency.

4.2 Restaurant Owner (Future Expansion)

  • Description: Owners of kosher restaurants who may wish to contribute menu updates or additional details.
  • Goals:
    • Ensure their restaurant is accurately represented on the platform.
    • Provide updated menu information (optional future feature).

5. Visuals Colors and Theme

The wild-restaurant platform will adopt a vibrant and modern color palette that reflects the energy and diversity of kosher dining in the tri-state area.

6. Signature Design Concept

"Interactive Menu Explorer"

The homepage will feature an interactive map of the tri-state area, where users can visually explore kosher restaurants. Each restaurant will be represented by a glowing pin that pulses gently to draw attention. Hovering over a pin will display a preview card with the restaurant's name, cuisine type, and a "View Menu" button.

Clicking on a pin will zoom into a detailed view of the restaurant, revealing its full menu in a scrollable, card-based layout. Each menu item card will feature:

  • The dish name.
  • A high-quality image (if available).
  • Calorie information sourced from the USDA FoodData database.

The menu cards will have a flip animation on hover, revealing additional details like ingredients or dietary notes.

Libraries to Use:

  • @react-three/fiber + @react-three/drei for the interactive map.
  • framer-motion for smooth animations and card flips.
  • gsap for scroll-triggered transitions and zoom effects.

7. Interaction Model & Motion Direction

Interaction Model: Parallax

The landing page will use a parallax interaction model, creating a sense of depth and immersion as users scroll. Layers such as the map background, restaurant pins, and menu cards will move at different speeds to enhance visual appeal.

Motion Direction:

  • Smooth zoom-in transitions when selecting a restaurant.
  • Hover effects on interactive elements like pins and menu cards.
  • Spring physics for card flips and button clicks.

8. Non-Functional Requirements

  • Performance: The platform must load restaurant and menu data within 2 seconds for 90% of users.
  • Scalability: The system should support up to 10,000 restaurants and 1,000,000 menu items.
  • Accessibility: The platform must comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
  • Localization: Default to US English, with support for additional languages in the future.
  • Data Accuracy: Nutritional data must be sourced directly from the USDA FoodData database.

9. Tech Stack

Frontend:

  • React for Web

Backend:

  • Python
  • FastAPI

Database:

  • MySQL for structured data (restaurant and menu details).

AI Tools:

  • None required for this phase.

Orchestration:

  • Docker for local development.
  • Kubernetes for server-side orchestration.

10. Assumptions and Constraints

  • The platform will initially focus only on kosher restaurants in the tri-state area.
  • Nutritional data will be automatically mapped to menu items using the USDA FoodData database.
  • Restaurants will not be required to manually input data.

11. Glossary

  • Kosher: Food that complies with Jewish dietary laws.
  • USDA FoodData: A comprehensive database of nutritional information provided by the United States Department of Agriculture.
  • Tri-State Area: The region encompassing New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
