Cold butter breaks into small crumbs when rubbed into flour. Pastry dough is firm, smooth, and slightly pliable rather than liquid. Rolled pastry bends naturally when lifted into the tart tin and maintains its fluted edges. Blind-baked pastry is dry, crisp, and evenly golden. Fresh lemon zest appears as fine yellow curls, while lemon juice flows naturally into the saucepan. The lemon mixture starts fluid and becomes visibly thicker under heat, with a glossy custard consistency. Whisk strokes leave temporary trails and ribbons across the lemon curd. The curd pours slowly and smoothly into the tart shell, settling into an even layer without splashing. Meringue starts foamy and develops into dense, glossy white peaks with realistic stiffness. Piped meringue retains its ridged star pattern and holds its shape. The blowtorch creates localized golden-brown toasted tips without melting or collapsing the entire meringue. The finished pastry looks crisp and delicate, the lemon curd smooth and rich, and the meringue airy with lightly toasted exterior texture. Natural highlights, subtle shadows, and believable food weight throughout.", "color_grade": "Warm, refined French patisserie aesthetic. Every ingredient must enter the scene through a visible hand action or already be present in its ramekin. Maintain the correct preparation order: pastry, blind baking, lemon curd, filling, meringue, piping, and torching. The tart must retain consistent proportions and appearance between cuts. The lemon curd must remain underneath the meringue. Meringue must remain fluffy and structurally stable. The final tart must have a clearly visible crisp pastry base, smooth lemon filling, and toasted meringue peaks. No camera equipment visible.", "negative_prompt": "No text overlays, no subtitles, no logos, no watermarks, no dialogue, no voiceover, no background music, no visible face, no extra hands, no extra fingers, no missing fingers, no warped anatomy, no floating utensils, no teleporting ingredients, no duplicated ingredients, no disappearing objects, no morphing tart, no changing kitchen, no changing sleeves, no inconsistent props, no raw pastry in the final shot, no runny lemon filling, no collapsed meringue, no plastic-looking food, no artificial textures, no oversaturated yellow, no excessive orange lighting, no flickering, no unnatural steam, no unrealistic food physics, no slow motion before the final hero shot, no crossfades, no dissolves, no unnecessary establishing shots, no static holds during the first 8 seconds, no snap zoom, no camera visible, no fade out." }

System Requirements

System Requirements Document for wild-pastry

1. Introduction

wild-pastry is a recipe showcase and production reference site for a single dessert: the French Lemon Meringue Tart. It exists to present one beautifully made pastry with the calm and precision it deserves, and to publish the complete production brief for a 10-second vertical food-cinematography clip of that tart being made from scratch.

The site serves two intertwined audiences. Home bakers come to read the full ingredient checklist and the step-by-step method in the correct preparation order — pastry, blind baking, lemon curd, filling, meringue, piping, and torching — so they can reproduce the tart themselves. Video-production people come to read the shot list and production brief — the 7 micro-shots of the first 8 seconds, the 2-second hero shot, camera, lighting, audio, colour grade, physics and texture notes, realism guardrails, and negative prompt — as a reference while planning or shooting the clip.

The site is a showcase and reference. It does not generate, render, or host video files. It presents the recipe and the production brief as readable, well-set content.

2. System Overview

2a. Product Interpretation and Delivery Boundary

wild-pastry is a first-party, publicly readable web application. All three destinations — Landing, Method, and Production Notes — are anonymous, no-account surfaces. There is no sign-in, no user profile, no saved state, and no differentiated permissions: every visitor sees the same published recipe and the same production brief. Nothing in the accepted requirements creates a durable actor-specific relationship, commitment, entitlement, or value transfer that would require application-owned identity, so no identity establishment or verification journey exists.

The product is delivered as a React frontend served alongside a shared FastAPI backend and a MariaDB database. The backend and database exist as provisioned infrastructure for the application; the accepted content is a fixed, authored recipe and production brief, so the current product does not require visitor-authored records, accounts, or an editing workflow. The frontend renders the recipe showcase and production reference; the backend serves the application's content APIs.

The boundary between current and future work is narrow and deliberate. Current work is exactly: presenting the featured tart, its 18-item ingredient checklist, its ordered method, its shot list, and its production brief details. Video generation, rendering, hosting, or playback of the clip is explicitly out of scope. Anything not listed in the Functional Requirements below is not part of this product.

Removed from scope

  • Video generation, rendering, or file output of the 10-second clip (also: video rendering, clip export)
  • User accounts, sign-in, profiles, and saved collections
  • Recipe editing, authoring, or submission by visitors
  • Playback or hosting of the finished video

2c. Page Content and Component Coverage

Landing

  • Information and state. The public entry surface. Presents the featured recipe identity — "French Lemon Meringue Tart" — as the single hero subject, with the Wild Pastry wordmark and a recipe label ("Wild Pastry — Recipe 01"). Presents the complete 18-item ingredient checklist. Routes onward to the Method and Production Notes. No loading state is required for authored content; if content is fetched, a quiet paper-white placeholder holds the hero and checklist positions.
  • Primary actions. Read the recipe title and hero image; scan the ingredient checklist; navigate to Method; navigate to Production Notes.
  • Supporting actions. Re-read the ingredient checklist as a shopping/prep reference; view the hero still-life of the finished tart.
  • Domain entities. Recipe (name, label, hero imagery), Ingredient (name, checklist position).
  • Component responsibilities.
    • Hero field — full-bleed paper-white ground; light Cormorant Garamond headline "French Lemon Meringue Tart" set at clamp(48px, 10vw, 128px) in two or three lines at left; a single gold hairline rule beneath it; small uppercase Karla label "Wild Pastry — Recipe 01"; a thin vertical gold margin rule at the far left edge; a large circular-cropped photograph of the finished tart on the white plate placed off-centre right and bleeding off the viewport edge. No button, no centred subtext, no gradient.
    • Ingredient checklist — two-column grid of square beige tiles, each with a small gold tick and the ingredient name in wide-tracked Karla. No cards, no shadows, no hover lift. All 18 items in source order: Plain flour; Cold unsalted butter; Icing sugar; Egg yolks; Salt; Fresh lemons; Caster sugar; Cornflour; Water; Whole eggs; Egg whites; Cream of tartar; Vanilla extract; Baked tart shell; Cooked lemon curd; Whipped meringue; Toasted meringue peaks; Final plated lemon tart.
  • Section navigation — quiet links to Method and Production Notes, set in wide-tracked uppercase Karla with hairline rules.
  • States. Empty: not applicable — content is authored and always present. Success: hero and all 18 tiles render. Error/recovery: if content fails to load, a paper-white message with a retry control replaces the affected region; the navigation remains usable. Reduced motion: hero image and tiles appear statically.

Method

  • Information and state. The step-by-step preparation method in the required order: pastry, blind baking, lemon curd, filling, meringue, piping, and torching. Each step is a full-width ruled row with a wide-tracked Karla step number at left and the instruction in Cormorant Garamond at 22px. Steps are separated by 1px muted-stone rules, like a recipe printed on a single sheet of paper.
  • Primary actions. Read the method in order; follow each step's instruction.
  • Supporting actions. Cross-reference the ingredient checklist on Landing; move to Production Notes.
  • Domain entities. MethodStep (order, title, instruction).
  • Component responsibilities.
    • Method sequence — vertical ruled list; step numbers in wide-tracked Karla; instructions in Cormorant Garamond 22px; 1px muted-stone rules between steps. Steps fade in sequentially at 80ms stagger.
  • Ordered step content — the seven ordered stages: Pastry (plain flour and icing sugar into the bowl; cold butter cubes and a pinch of salt rubbed to fine buttery crumbs; egg yolk incorporated until dough begins forming); Blind baking (pale pastry rolled thin, lifted over the fluted tin, pressed into the edges; golden blind-baked shell removed from the oven); Lemon curd (lemon zest and juice into a saucepan with caster sugar, water, and cornflour, whisked; egg yolks and whole eggs whisked in; mixture thickened over gentle heat to a smooth glossy curd that leaves ribbons); Filling (warm curd poured into the golden shell, spread evenly to the fluted edges, levelled smooth); Meringue (egg whites beaten with cream of tartar, caster sugar, and vanilla to thick, glossy, stiff peaks; transferred to a piping bag with a star nozzle); Piping (white meringue piped into generous decorative peaks across the lemon filling); Torching (blowtorch passed briefly over the surface to create golden-brown toasted tips with creamy-white valleys).
  • Texture and appearance notes — the physics-and-texture guidance that makes the method legible: cold butter breaks into crumbs; dough is firm, smooth, pliable; rolled pastry bends and keeps its fluted edges; blind-baked pastry is dry, crisp, evenly golden; zest appears as fine yellow curls; the lemon mixture thickens to a glossy custard; whisk strokes leave temporary trails and ribbons; curd pours slowly and settles evenly without splashing; meringue develops dense glossy peaks; piped meringue holds its ridged star pattern; the blowtorch toasts tips without melting or collapsing the meringue; the finished pastry is crisp, the curd smooth and rich, the meringue airy with a lightly toasted exterior.
  • States. Empty: not applicable. Success: all seven ordered steps render with numbers and rules. Error/recovery: a failed content load shows a paper-white retry message in place of the sequence; navigation remains usable. Reduced motion: steps appear statically without stagger.

Failure/recovery: not applicable. Continuation: the visitor reads the recipe and brief.

4. User Personas

Home baker

The Home baker arrives with flour on the counter and a specific ambition: to make a French lemon meringue tart from scratch, correctly. Their context is a real kitchen, not a browsing session — they need the full ingredient list before they start and the method in the right order while they work. Their primary goal is to follow the preparation sequence — pastry, blind baking, lemon curd, filling, meringue, piping, torching — without skipping a stage or reversing two. Their distinct responsibility is to gather all 18 checklist items and to execute the seven ordered steps. Their inputs are the ingredient checklist and the method instructions; their decisions are about when the pastry is ready to blind bake, when the curd has thickened enough to leave ribbons, and when the meringue holds stiff peaks. They interact with the Recipe site visitor (who may be reading alongside them) and with the Video production reference user only indirectly, through the shared recipe. Observable success: they have every ingredient and have worked through all seven steps in order.

Recipe site visitor

The Recipe site visitor browses the Wild Pastry showcase to see the featured tart, its ingredients, and its step-by-step method, and to understand the finished dessert's appearance and texture. Their context is exploratory: they may not intend to bake today. Their primary goal is to understand what the tart is and how it is made. Their distinct responsibility is to read and comprehend the showcase — the hero presentation, the ingredient checklist, and the ordered method — rather than to execute it. Their inputs are the Landing hero, the checklist, and the Method page; their decisions are whether to continue to the method or to the production notes. They interact with the Home baker as a fellow reader of the same content. Observable success: they can describe the tart's layers — crisp pastry, glossy lemon curd, toasted meringue — and the order in which it is made.

Video production reference user

The Video production reference user is planning or shooting the 10-second vertical clip and treats the site as a technical sheet. Their context is a production or pre-production session, not a kitchen. Their primary goal is to reproduce the intended shot list and look. Their distinct responsibility is to read the shot list — the 7 micro-shots of the first 8 seconds and the 2-second hero shot — and the production brief details: duration, 9:16 1080p format, setting, hands and sleeves, props, lighting, camera style, ASMR audio, colour grade, physics and texture, realism guardrails, and negative prompt. Their inputs are the shot table and the brief blocks; their decisions are about camera angles, cut timing, lighting temperature, and which prohibitions to enforce on set. They interact with the Home baker only through the shared preparation order, which the shot list must respect. Observable success: they can plan or shoot the clip against the published brief without ambiguity.

5. Core User Flows

Flow A — Recipe site visitor browses the showcase

  1. The visitor opens wild-pastry and lands on Landing (anonymous; no sign-in).
  2. The hero field presents "French Lemon Meringue Tart" in light Cormorant Garamond at large scale, with the gold hairline rule and the "Wild Pastry — Recipe 01" label; the circular-cropped tart photograph bleeds off the right edge.
  3. The visitor scans the 18-item ingredient checklist as square beige tiles with gold ticks.
  4. The visitor selects Method and reads the seven ordered steps, each a ruled row with a wide-tracked step number.
  5. The visitor selects Production Notes and reads the shot table and brief blocks.
  6. Observable result: the visitor understands the tart's layers and the order of preparation. Continuation: they may return to Landing or leave the site.

Flow B — Home baker prepares the tart

  1. The baker opens Landing and reads the full ingredient checklist, gathering all 18 items.
  2. The baker selects Method.
  3. Pastry: they combine plain flour and icing sugar, add cold butter cubes and a pinch of salt, rub to fine buttery crumbs, and incorporate egg yolk until the dough begins forming.
  4. Blind baking: they roll the pale pastry thin, lift it over the fluted tin, press it into the edges, and blind bake to a golden shell.
  5. Lemon curd: they scrape lemon zest into a saucepan, add juice, caster sugar, water, and cornflour, whisk, then whisk in egg yolks and whole eggs and thicken over gentle heat until the curd is glossy and leaves ribbons.
  6. Filling: they pour the warm curd into the shell, spread it evenly to the fluted edges, and level the surface.
  7. Meringue: they beat egg whites with cream of tartar, caster sugar, and vanilla to thick, glossy, stiff peaks and transfer the meringue to a piping bag with a star nozzle.
  8. Piping: they pipe generous decorative peaks across the lemon filling.
  9. Torching: they pass a kitchen blowtorch briefly over the surface to create golden-brown toasted tips with creamy-white valleys.
  10. Observable result: a finished tart with crisp pastry, smooth lemon filling, and toasted meringue peaks. Failure/recovery: if a step's outcome is wrong (curd too thin, meringue not stiff), the baker re-reads that step's texture notes and repeats it. Continuation: the baker may cross-reference the checklist again.

Flow C — Video production reference user plans the clip

  1. The user opens Production Notes (anonymous).
  2. They read the shot table: 7 micro-shots at 0:00–0:01.1, 0:01.1–0:02.2, 0:02.2–0:03.3, 0:03.3–0:04.4, 0:04.4–0:05.5, 0:05.5–0:06.6, and 0:06.6–0:08.0, plus the 0:08.0–0:10.0 hero shot.
  3. They read the pacing rule: exactly 7 micro-shots in the first 8 seconds at approximately 1.1 seconds each, the final 2 seconds reserved exclusively for the completed dessert, hard jump cuts only.
  4. They read the production brief block: duration, 9:16 1080p format, setting, hands and sleeves, props, lighting, camera style, ASMR audio, and colour grade.
  5. They read the realism guardrails and the negative prompt.
  6. Observable result: the user has a complete, unambiguous reference for planning or shooting the clip. Failure/recovery: if a brief block fails to load, a retry control restores it. Continuation: the user may cross-reference Method for the preparation order.

6. Visuals Colors and Theme

The visual language is Emptiness as content — a quiet patisserie frame for one perfect tart, after Kenya Hara. The interface behaves like a clean kitchen counter: plenty of room, one object in focus, nothing competing with the food.

Palette (light mode). Background #F7F4EE (paper-white, dominant ground); surface #EFEAE1 (unbleached beige, for panels, ingredient tiles, and the production-notes sheet); text #2B2A27 (charcoal ink, all reading text); primary #D9A62E (pastry-gold, used sparingly — a rule, a step number, one underline); accent #E8C547 (lemon-yellow, only as a small highlight on the hero and checklist ticks); muted #8C877D (stone, for labels and metadata). No blue, no violet, no gradient blobs. Proportions: roughly 70% paper ground, 20% beige surface, 7% ink, 3% accent.

Typography. Headings: Cormorant Garamond, Light 300–400, at large display sizes with wide tracking (0.02em), sentence case, generous leading (1.05–1.15). Body: Karla. Small caps or wide-tracked uppercase Karla is reserved for labels, step numbers, and metadata. Scale 1.5 modular: 72/48/32/22/17/15. Display headline clamp(48px, 10vw, 128px); section headings clamp(32px, 5vw, 56px); body 17px with 1.7 line-height; labels 13px uppercase with 0.14em tracking.

Shape language. Square proportions and thin rules. Cards and panels are sharp-cornered or have a 2px radius at most. Hairline 1px rules in muted stone divide sections. Generous margins (min 6vw) and a visible but quiet 12-column grid. The tart tin's fluted circle is the only round shape allowed, appearing as a circular image mask or a thin ring, never as a decorative blob.

Layout. Centred, sequential, gallery-like. Landing: a vast paper-white field with the tart image placed off-centre right, the recipe title set light and large at left, and a single gold hairline rule beneath it; the ingredient checklist as a two-column list of square beige tiles. Method: a vertical sequence of numbered steps separated by thin rules, each a full-width row with the step number in wide-tracked Karla and the instruction in Cormorant Garamond at 22px. Production Notes: a clean technical sheet — a ruled table for the 7 micro-shots (timecode, action, ingredient) and a second ruled block for camera, lighting, audio, colour grade, and guardrails, all on beige surface with ink text.

Imagery. Still-life photography on plain grounds: the finished tart on the white serving plate, a macro of the toasted meringue peaks, a top-down of the fluted pastry shell, and a single frame of the flour-dusted wooden counter. Images are softly lit, warm 3500K, gently desaturated surroundings, with the lemon curd and meringue carrying the only saturated colour. No stock people, no hands in the interface imagery, no clip art. Where a prop needs illustrating (whisk, tart tin, blowtorch), use a thin-line pictogram in ink on paper.

7. Signature Design Concept

The public entry is a full-bleed paper-white field. At the left, a light Cormorant Garamond headline set at clamp(48px, 10vw, 128px) reads French Lemon Meringue Tart in two or three lines, with a single gold hairline rule running beneath it and a small uppercase Karla label Wild Pastry — Recipe 01. At the right, a large circular-cropped photograph of the finished tart on the white plate sits slightly off the right edge, bleeding off the viewport, with its toasted peaks catching warm light. There is no button, no centred subtext, no gradient. The tart is the dominant element; the type is the quiet frame around it. A thin vertical gold rule at the far left edge acts as a margin mark.

The signature moves that carry through the site: the oversized light-weight headline on paper white with a single gold hairline rule; the circular-cropped still-life bleeding off the right edge; the ingredient checklist as square beige tiles in a two-column grid with small gold ticks and no cards, shadows, or hover lift; the method as a ruled vertical sequence with wide-tracked step numbers and Cormorant Garamond instructions; and the production notes as a ruled technical sheet on beige surface.

8. Interaction Model & Motion Direction

Interaction Model: Static (direction) Motion Tempo: still Hero Dimensionality: flat

Landing Hero Motion Brief. The focal subject is the circular-cropped still-life of the finished French lemon meringue tart on the white serving plate, bleeding off the right edge of the paper-white field. The input→transformation→outcome thesis: on load, the hero tart image fades in over 1.2 seconds from paper white to full presence, while the headline, gold hairline rule, and label are already set; the outcome is a still, composed first frame with the tart as the dominant element and the type as its quiet frame. Motion vocabulary: a single slow 1.2s fade of the hero tart image on load; slow 600ms fades on scroll reveal of the hero image and the ingredient tiles; method steps fade in sequentially at 80ms stagger. No parallax, no bounce, no hover lift. The composed first frame: paper-white ground, light Cormorant Garamond headline at left in two or three lines, gold hairline rule beneath, "Wild Pastry — Recipe 01" label, thin vertical gold margin rule at the far left edge, and the circular tart photograph at right bleeding off the viewport. Reduced-motion state: everything appears statically, with no fade and no stagger.

9. Non-Functional Requirements

  • Readability at every viewport. Headlines, wordmarks, labels, numbers, tiles' text, and controls stay entirely inside the viewport and their container at 375px, 768px, and 1280px, wrapping or scaling (for example font-size: clamp(...) with its mobile size) to fit; no other element covers any part of them. Imagery and decoration may be cropped or bled off an edge as the direction asks, as long as they cover no readable text or control. Provenance: explicit (user design constraints).
  • Reduced motion. With prefers-reduced-motion, provide a usable static arrangement: hero image, ingredient tiles, and method steps appear statically with no fade and no stagger. Provenance: explicit (creative direction).
  • No video generation or rendering. The site presents the recipe and production brief as readable content; it does not generate, render, or host video files. Provenance: explicit.
  • Content fidelity. The ingredient checklist preserves all 18 items in source order; the method preserves the seven-stage preparation order; the shot list preserves exactly 7 micro-shots in the first 8 seconds at approximately 1.1 seconds each plus the 2-second hero shot; the pacing rule, realism guardrails, and negative prompt are reproduced in full. Provenance: explicit.
  • Anonymous public access. All three destinations are publicly readable with no account, sign-in, or differentiated permissions. Provenance: required_inference (access reconciliation).
  • Performance. Authored content should render without perceptible delay; if content is fetched, a quiet paper-white placeholder holds layout to avoid shift. Provenance: required_inference.

10. Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React application UI, rendering the Landing, Method, and Production Notes surfaces with the Cormorant Garamond / Karla typography and paper-white palette.
  • Backend: shared FastAPI process for application APIs and domain modules, serving the recipe, ingredient checklist, method steps, shot list, and production brief content.
  • Database: MariaDB for application-owned persistent data (recipe content and production brief records).
  • Deployment: Docker / docker-compose for the frontend, backend, and database services.

11. Assumptions and Constraints

  • Assumption: The recipe and production brief are authored, fixed content; the current product does not require visitor-authored records, accounts, or an editing workflow. Label: required_inference.
  • Assumption: The MariaDB database stores the authored recipe and production brief content; no visitor-specific state is persisted. Label: required_inference.
  • Constraint: The site does not generate or render video files. Provenance: explicit.
  • Constraint: The shot list uses exactly 7 micro-shots during the first 8 seconds, approximately 1.1 seconds each, with the remaining 2 seconds reserved exclusively for the completed dessert hero shot. Provenance: explicit.
  • Constraint: Hard jump cuts only in the first 8 seconds: no dissolves, no crossfades, no slow motion, no static holds; only the final shot uses a smooth, subtle push-in. Provenance: explicit.
  • Constraint: Exactly one consistent pair of light-medium skin-tone hands throughout, exactly five fingers on each hand, no rings or jewelry, gray rolled-up sleeves, no face or upper body visible. Provenance: explicit.
  • Constraint: All listed props remain consistent throughout the video. Provenance: explicit.
  • Constraint: Audio is detailed natural kitchen ASMR only: no dialogue, no voiceover, no background music. Provenance: explicit.
  • Constraint: The negative prompt prohibitions apply to the video brief as stated in full on Production Notes. Provenance: explicit.

12. Glossary

  • Micro-shot — One of exactly 7 short shots in the first 8 seconds of the clip, each approximately 1.1 seconds and each communicating one distinct ingredient or preparation action.
  • Hero shot — The final 2 seconds of the clip, reserved exclusively for the completed dessert, using a smooth, subtle push-in.
  • Pacing rule — The timing constraint: 7 micro-shots in the first 8 seconds at approximately 1.1 seconds each, the remaining 2 seconds for the hero shot, hard jump cuts only.
  • Blind baking — Baking the pastry shell without filling until dry, crisp, and evenly golden.
  • Lemon curd — The cooked lemon filling, thickened over gentle heat to a smooth, glossy custard that leaves ribbons.
  • Meringue — Egg whites beaten with cream of tartar, caster sugar, and vanilla to thick, glossy, stiff peaks.
  • Realism guardrails — The consistency rules for hands, props, kitchen, preparation order, and food physics across the clip.
  • Negative prompt — The list of prohibited visual and audio elements for the clip.
  • ASMR audio — Detailed natural kitchen sounds only, with no dialogue, voiceover, or background music.
