urban-altruism

byUmi Maryam

We often praise people for being kind. But think about it—how often do people actually help without expecting something back? Every day we see people donating, helping strangers, or making sacrifices for others. All of that is seen as proof that humans are good. Religion, school, and our culture keep teaching us that people are naturally caring and compassionate. But philosophers and psychologists have been debating this for a long time: are these actions truly sincere, or are they really just for our own benefit? If every act of kindness always comes with some payoff for the person doing it, then it gets hard to tell the difference between altruism and selfishness. This essay wants to argue that humans are actually selfish, because they're driven by survival instincts, the need for inner satisfaction, and the desire to be recognized by others. So this essay will first look at how survival instincts shape the way we help, then how kindness can satisfy us inside, and finally how social rewards make people eager to give—before we consider whether actions that are truly without any ulterior motive can even exist.
