System Requirements Document (SRD)

Project Name: super-authentication

1. Introduction

The super-authentication project aims to create a robust and scalable authentication system tailored for modern web applications. This document outlines the system requirements, functional features, user personas, design concepts, and technical specifications for the project. The goal is to ensure secure, efficient, and user-friendly authentication mechanisms while maintaining flexibility for future enhancements.

This SRD has been prepared for Mayur, based in India (IN), and considers locale-specific defaults such as Indian Standard Time (IST) and regional user expectations.

2. System Overview

The super-authentication system will serve as a foundational module for web applications requiring secure user authentication. It will include features such as user signup, login, logout, and token-based authentication using JSON Web Tokens (JWT). The system will prioritize security, scalability, and ease of integration with other services.

Key objectives:

  • Provide a seamless and secure user authentication experience.
  • Ensure scalability to handle a growing user base.
  • Simplify integration with frontend and backend systems.
  • Lay the groundwork for future enhancements, such as multi-factor authentication (MFA).

3. Functional Requirements

User Stories:

  • As a User, I should be able to sign up with my email and password.
  • As a User, I should be able to log in using my email and password.
  • As a User, I should be able to log out of my account securely.
  • As a User, I should receive a JWT token upon successful login.
  • As a User, I should be able to reset my password if I forget it.
  • As a User, I should be notified of failed login attempts for my account.
  • As an Admin, I should be able to view and manage user accounts.

4. User Personas

1. Regular User

  • Description: End-users who will sign up and log in to access the application.
  • Goals: Securely authenticate and manage their account.
  • Pain Points: Forgotten passwords, account security concerns.

2. Admin

  • Description: Administrators responsible for managing user accounts and monitoring system activity.
  • Goals: Ensure system security and manage user-related issues.
  • Pain Points: Detecting and mitigating unauthorized access attempts.

5. Visuals Colors and Theme

Unique Color Palette for super-authentication:

  • Background: #F4F9FF (Light Sky Blue)
  • Surface: #FFFFFF (Pure White)
  • Text: #1A1A1A (Deep Charcoal)
  • Accent: #0078D7 (Azure Blue)
  • Muted Tones: #B0BEC5 (Soft Gray)

The color palette is designed to evoke trust, security, and modernity, aligning with the project's focus on authentication.

6. Signature Design Concept

Interactive Security Dashboard Landing Page

The homepage will feature a dynamic, interactive security dashboard that visually represents the user's account activity and security status.

Key Features:

  1. Animated Security Graphs:

    • Real-time visualizations of login attempts, successful logins, and failed attempts.
    • Graphs will animate on page load, creating a sense of interactivity.
  2. Interactive Token Visualization:

    • A 3D rotating JWT token model that users can click to "inspect," revealing token metadata (e.g., issued time, expiration).
  3. Micro-Interactions:

    • Buttons and icons will have subtle hover effects, such as glowing borders or slight scaling.
  4. Color Transitions:

    • The background will shift subtly between shades of blue and white, symbolizing trust and security.

This design will make the landing page visually captivating while reinforcing the project's focus on security and transparency.

7. Non-Functional Requirements

  • Performance: The system should handle up to 10,000 concurrent users with minimal latency.
  • Scalability: The architecture should support horizontal scaling to accommodate future growth.
  • Security:
    • Passwords must be hashed using bcrypt with a minimum cost factor of 12.
    • JWT tokens must be signed using a secure algorithm (e.g., HS256 or RS256).
  • Availability: The system should maintain 99.9% uptime.
  • Localization: Default to English (en-IN) with support for additional languages in the future.

8. Tech Stack

Frontend

  • React.js: For building a dynamic and responsive user interface.

Backend

  • Node.js with Express.js: Lightweight and efficient for handling authentication logic and API requests.

Database

  • PostgreSQL: A robust relational database for storing user data.

Authentication

  • JWT (JSON Web Tokens): Stateless and secure token-based authentication.

Hosting

  • Frontend Hosting: Vercel for seamless deployment and CDN integration.
  • Backend Hosting: AWS EC2 for scalability and reliability.

Additional Tools

  • GitHub: For version control and collaboration.
  • GitHub Actions: For CI/CD pipelines.

9. Assumptions and Constraints

Assumptions:

  • Users will primarily access the system via modern web browsers.
  • The system will initially support a single language (English).
  • All user data will be stored securely in a centralized database.

Constraints:

  • The MVP will not include advanced features like multi-factor authentication (MFA) or Redis-based caching.
  • The system must comply with GDPR and other relevant data protection regulations.

10. Glossary

  • JWT (JSON Web Token): A compact, URL-safe means of representing claims to be transferred between two parties.
  • MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication): An authentication method that requires two or more verification factors.
  • bcrypt: A password-hashing function designed for secure password storage.
  • CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment): Practices for automating software testing and deployment.
