System Requirements Document (SRD)

Project Name: smart-carousel

1. Introduction

The smart-carousel project is designed to create an engaging, infinite horizontal carousel slider for showcasing images. The carousel will feature drag-based interaction, allowing users to swipe left and right intuitively. Each image will include captions with a heading, subheading, and description, providing context and enhancing the user experience. The carousel will loop infinitely, ensuring seamless navigation and a dynamic presentation.

This document outlines the system requirements for the smart-carousel project, tailored to Boris Lee's specifications and optimized for deployment in Vietnam (VN). Locale-specific considerations, such as time zones and user preferences, have been incorporated where relevant.

2. System Overview

The smart-carousel system will serve as a visually appealing and interactive component for websites or applications. It will:

  • Provide an infinite horizontal scrolling experience.
  • Allow users to interact with the carousel by dragging/swiping left and right.
  • Display captions for each image, including a heading, subheading, and description.
  • Support lazy loading for efficient performance with large image sets.
  • Be optimized for both desktop and mobile platforms.

The system will be built using modern web technologies, ensuring scalability, responsiveness, and a smooth user experience.

3. Functional Requirements

  • As a User, I should be able to swipe left and right to navigate through the carousel.
  • As a User, I should see captions (heading, subheading, and description) for each image.
  • As a User, I should experience a seamless looping carousel without interruptions.
  • As a User, I should experience smooth animations during transitions between images.
  • As a User, I should benefit from lazy loading to ensure fast performance, even with large image sets.

4. User Personas

1. End User

  • Description: General users interacting with the carousel on a website or app.
  • Goals:
    • Navigate the carousel smoothly.
    • View and understand the captions for each image.
    • Enjoy a visually appealing and responsive experience.

2. Content Manager

  • Description: Administrators or editors responsible for uploading and managing carousel content.
  • Goals:
    • Easily upload images and input captions (heading, subheading, description).
    • Ensure the carousel content is displayed correctly.

5. Visuals Colors and Theme

The smart-carousel will feature a unique and vibrant color palette to enhance its visual appeal:

  • Background: #1A1A2E (Deep Midnight Blue)
  • Surface: #16213E (Dark Navy)
  • Text: #EAEAEA (Soft White)
  • Accent: #F05454 (Vivid Coral Red)
  • Muted: #6C757D (Muted Gray)

This palette ensures a modern and elegant aesthetic, with high contrast for readability and vibrant accents for interactivity.

6. Signature Design Concept

The smart-carousel will feature a "Living Canvas" design concept.

Key Features:

  1. Dynamic Background Animation:

    • The homepage will feature a subtle gradient animation that shifts colors based on the time of day (e.g., warm tones in the morning, cool tones at night).
  2. Interactive Image Cards:

    • Each image in the carousel will appear as a "card" with a slight 3D tilt effect when hovered over or dragged.
    • Cards will "snap" into place with a smooth elastic animation when released.
  3. Caption Reveal Animation:

    • Captions will fade in from the bottom of the card as the image comes into focus.
    • The heading will appear first, followed by the subheading and description in a cascading effect.
  4. Looping Transition:

    • The carousel will seamlessly loop, with the last image transitioning smoothly back to the first.

This design will create an immersive and memorable first impression, encouraging users to engage with the carousel.

7. Non-Functional Requirements

  • Performance: The carousel must load within 2 seconds on a standard 4G connection.
  • Responsiveness: The carousel must adapt to various screen sizes, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Accessibility: The carousel must support keyboard navigation and screen readers.
  • Scalability: The system must handle up to 10,000 images without performance degradation.
  • Localization: The system must support Vietnamese language captions and right-to-left text alignment if needed.

8. Tech Stack

Frontend

  • React for Web

Backend

  • Python
  • FastAPI

Database

  • MySQL (with Alembic for migrations)

AI Tools

  • Litellm for LLM Routing

Local Orchestration

  • Docker
  • docker-compose

9. Assumptions and Constraints

  • The carousel will primarily be used for image content.
  • All images will be provided in a web-optimized format (e.g., JPEG, PNG).
  • The system will be hosted on a cloud platform with sufficient resources for scalability.
  • The project will adhere to GDPR and other relevant data protection regulations.

10. Glossary

  • Carousel: A horizontally scrolling interface component that displays images or content in a loop.
  • Lazy Loading: A technique to load content only when it is needed, improving performance.
  • Caption: Text associated with an image, providing context or additional information.
  • 3D Tilt Effect: A visual effect that gives the appearance of depth when interacting with an element.
  • Elastic Animation: A smooth, spring-like motion used in transitions.
