neon-dashboard

bySudhir Kadam

Build a real-time 'TaskPulse' dashboard. I need a Tech Lead to break this down, a System Architect to design the schema, and Frontend/Backend agents to execute it. Requirements: 1. Backend: FastAPI with a WebSocket endpoint (/ws/{team_id}) that pushes random 'progress' events every 5 seconds. 2. DB: PostgreSQL schema for teams and tasks. 3. Frontend: A React table showing 'Team Name' and 'Last Task'. Update the table in real-time via WebSockets. 4. Output: Deploy this to the provided Kubernetes staging environment and give me the live URL.

System Requirements Document (SRD) for neon-dashboard

1. Introduction

The neon-dashboard project, also referred to as TaskPulse, is a real-time dashboard designed to provide actionable insights for teams by leveraging WebSockets, PostgreSQL, and React. This document outlines the system requirements for building and deploying the dashboard, ensuring it meets the functional and non-functional needs specified by Sudhir Kadam. The project will be deployed in a Kubernetes staging environment for scalability and reliability.

The dashboard will simulate real-time task progress updates using randomized events, providing a dynamic and interactive experience for users. This document serves as a comprehensive guide for the development team, including Tech Leads, System Architects, and Frontend/Backend developers.

2. System Overview

The neon-dashboard is a real-time task monitoring system that consists of the following components:

  1. Backend: A FastAPI server with a WebSocket endpoint that pushes randomized progress events every 5 seconds.
  2. Database: A PostgreSQL database to store team and task data with a schema designed for scalability.
  3. Frontend: A React-based table that displays team names and their last task, updated in real-time via WebSocket events.
  4. Deployment: The system will be deployed to a Kubernetes staging environment, ensuring scalability and reliability.

The system is designed to provide a seamless and interactive user experience, focusing on real-time updates and simplicity during the testing phase.

3. Functional Requirements

  • As a Backend Developer, I should be able to create a FastAPI WebSocket endpoint (/ws/{team_id}) that pushes random progress events every 5 seconds.
  • As a Database Architect, I should design a PostgreSQL schema to store team and task data.
  • As a Frontend Developer, I should create a React table that displays "Team Name" and "Last Task" and updates in real-time via WebSocket events.
  • As a DevOps Engineer, I should deploy the system to the provided Kubernetes staging environment and provide a live URL.

4. User Personas

4.1 Tech Lead

  • Role: Oversees the project, ensures timely delivery, and coordinates between teams.
  • Needs: High-level visibility of system progress and functionality.

4.2 System Architect

  • Role: Designs the database schema and overall system architecture.
  • Needs: Clear requirements for scalability and integration points.

4.3 Backend Developer

  • Role: Implements the WebSocket endpoint and backend logic.
  • Needs: A clear API specification and database schema.

4.4 Frontend Developer

  • Role: Builds the React-based dashboard.
  • Needs: WebSocket integration details and design guidelines.

4.5 DevOps Engineer

  • Role: Deploys the system to Kubernetes and ensures it runs smoothly.
  • Needs: Deployment scripts and access to the staging environment.

5. Visuals Colors and Theme

The neon-dashboard will feature a vibrant and modern color palette to reflect its dynamic and real-time nature. The following unique color scheme has been designed:

  • Background: #0D1117 (Deep Space Black)
  • Surface: #161B22 (Charcoal Gray)
  • Text: #C9D1D9 (Soft White)
  • Accent: #58A6FF (Electric Blue)
  • Muted Tones: #8B949E (Muted Gray)

This palette ensures high contrast and readability while maintaining a sleek and professional appearance.

6. Signature Design Concept

"Neon Pulse" Interactive Landing Page

The landing page of the neon-dashboard will feature a pulsating neon grid that visually represents the heartbeat of the dashboard. Here's how it will work:

  1. Background Animation: A dynamic neon grid that pulses in sync with the WebSocket updates (every 5 seconds). Each pulse will ripple outward, creating a mesmerizing effect.
  2. Interactive Elements: Hovering over grid points will reveal tooltips with random "progress" values, simulating task updates.
  3. Real-Time Table: The main table will appear as a floating glass panel above the neon grid, with smooth fade-in animations.
  4. Micro-Interactions: Rows in the table will glow briefly when updated, drawing the user's attention to changes.
  5. Color Shifts: The neon grid will subtly shift colors over time, cycling through shades of blue, purple, and green to create a futuristic aesthetic.

This design will make the neon-dashboard instantly captivating and memorable, setting it apart from traditional dashboards.

7. Non-Functional Requirements

  • Performance: The WebSocket endpoint should handle up to 1,000 concurrent connections without significant latency.
  • Scalability: The system should be easily scalable using Kubernetes.
  • Reliability: The system should maintain 99.9% uptime during the testing phase.
  • Security: No authentication is required for this testing phase, but the system should be designed to accommodate future security features.
  • Usability: The dashboard should be intuitive and responsive across devices.

8. Tech Stack

Frontend

  • React for Web

Backend

  • Python
  • FastAPI

Database

  • PostgreSQL (RDBMS)

Deployment

  • Kubernetes
  • Docker
  • docker-compose

9. Assumptions and Constraints

  • Assumptions:

    • Progress events are randomized and not tied to actual task data.
    • No authentication is required for this phase.
    • The Kubernetes staging environment is pre-configured and accessible.
  • Constraints:

    • The system must be deployed within the provided Kubernetes staging environment.
    • The WebSocket endpoint must push updates every 5 seconds.

10. Glossary

  • WebSocket: A protocol for full-duplex communication between a client and server.
  • FastAPI: A modern, fast web framework for building APIs with Python.
  • PostgreSQL: A powerful, open-source relational database system.
  • Kubernetes: An open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.
  • React: A JavaScript library for building user interfaces.
  • Docker: A platform for developing, shipping, and running applications in containers.
