Project Name: grand-browser

1. Introduction

The grand-browser project is a browser extension designed to provide developers with a powerful tool for visualizing and analyzing JavaScript's event loop tasks. This extension aims to bridge the gap between learning and debugging by offering real-time task visualization and session replay capabilities. Whether you're a new developer trying to understand the event loop or an experienced developer debugging performance bottlenecks, grand-browser is tailored to meet your needs.

This document outlines the system requirements for the grand-browser project, ensuring clarity and alignment with the project's goals.

2. System Overview

The grand-browser extension will serve as a developer tool integrated into modern web browsers. It will visualize the JavaScript event loop, including tasks such as callbacks, promises, rendering cycles, and event queues. The extension will operate in two primary modes:

  1. Real-Time Visualization: Displays tasks as they are executed, providing immediate insights into the event loop's behavior.
  2. Session Replay: Allows users to record event loop activity and replay it for deeper analysis, making it an excellent learning and debugging tool.

The extension will cater to both novice and experienced developers, balancing simplicity with advanced features. It will be optimized for developers in India (IN), considering locale-specific defaults such as IST (Indian Standard Time) for timestamps.

3. Functional Requirements

  • As a User, I should be able to visualize event loop tasks (callbacks, promises, rendering cycles) in real time.
  • As a User, I should be able to record event loop activity for a session.
  • As a User, I should be able to replay recorded sessions for analysis.
  • As a User, I should be able to filter tasks by type (e.g., microtasks, macrotasks, rendering).
  • As a User, I should be able to zoom in and out of the timeline for detailed inspection.
  • As a User, I should be able to export recorded sessions as JSON for sharing or further analysis.
  • As a User, I should be able to toggle between light and dark themes for better visibility.
  • As a User, I should be able to view timestamps in IST (Indian Standard Time).
  • As a User, I should be able to access a help section explaining the event loop concepts.

4. User Personas

4.1 New Developer

  • Description: A beginner learning JavaScript and the event loop.
  • Goals: Understand how tasks are executed and scheduled in JavaScript.
  • Needs: Simple and intuitive visualizations, educational tooltips, and a help section.

4.2 Experienced Developer

  • Description: A professional developer debugging performance issues or optimizing code.
  • Goals: Analyze task execution patterns, identify bottlenecks, and optimize performance.
  • Needs: Advanced filtering, detailed timelines, and export capabilities.

5. Visuals Colors and Theme

The grand-browser extension will feature a unique and modern color palette to enhance usability and aesthetics:

  • Background: #1E1E2F (Deep Midnight Blue)
  • Surface: #2A2A3C (Charcoal Gray)
  • Text: #E8E8F2 (Soft White)
  • Accent: #FF6F61 (Coral Red)
  • Muted: #6C6C80 (Muted Gray)

This palette ensures high contrast and readability while maintaining a professional and sleek appearance.

6. Signature Design Concept

The grand-browser extension will feature a dynamic, interactive timeline as its signature design concept.

Concept Details:

  • Interactive Timeline: The homepage of the extension will display a horizontal timeline representing the event loop's activity.
  • Task Nodes: Each task (callback, promise, rendering) will appear as a glowing node on the timeline, color-coded by type.
  • Animations: Nodes will "pulse" when active and leave a fading trail to indicate task completion.
  • Zoom and Pan: Users can zoom in and out of the timeline and pan across it to explore tasks in detail.
  • Hover Interactions: Hovering over a node will display a tooltip with task details (e.g., type, timestamp, duration).
  • Replay Mode: In replay mode, the timeline will "play" like a video, animating task execution in sequence.
  • Theme Adaptation: The timeline will adapt to the selected theme (light or dark) for optimal visibility.

This design ensures an engaging and memorable user experience, making the event loop visualization both functional and visually captivating.

7. Non-Functional Requirements

  • The extension must load and render visualizations within 200ms for real-time mode.
  • The extension must support modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) with the latest two versions.
  • The extension must handle sessions with up to 10,000 tasks without performance degradation.
  • The extension must comply with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA).
  • The extension must store recorded sessions locally, ensuring user privacy.

9. Assumptions and Constraints

  • The extension assumes users have basic knowledge of JavaScript and the event loop.
  • The extension will not support legacy browsers (e.g., Internet Explorer).
  • The extension will store data locally and will not require a backend server for core functionality.

10. Glossary

  • Event Loop: A mechanism in JavaScript that handles the execution of tasks, microtasks, and rendering.
  • Microtasks: Tasks that are executed after the currently executing script, such as promises.
  • Macrotasks: Tasks that are executed after microtasks, such as setTimeout callbacks.
  • Rendering Cycle: The process of updating the UI based on changes in the DOM.
  • IST: Indian Standard Time, the time zone used in India (UTC+5:30).
