emerald-tic System Requirements Document

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to outline the system requirements for the "emerald-tic" project. This project aims to develop a web-based, two-player tic-tac-toe game.

System Overview

The "emerald-tic" project is a web application designed to provide an interactive and engaging tic-tac-toe game experience for two players. The application will be accessible via web browsers and will focus on simplicity and ease of use, ensuring that players can quickly start a game without any complex setup.

Functional Requirements

  • As a Player, I should be able to start a new game of tic-tac-toe.
  • As a Player, I should be able to take turns with another player.
  • As a Player, I should be able to see the game board update in real-time as moves are made.
  • As a Player, I should be able to reset the game to start a new match.
  • As a Player, I should be able to see a notification when a player wins or when the game ends in a draw.

User Personas

  • Player 1: A user who initiates the game and takes the first turn.
  • Player 2: A user who joins the game and takes the second turn.

Core User Flows

  • Player 1 starts the game -> Player 2 joins -> Players take turns marking the board -> Game checks for win/draw condition -> Game ends with a win/draw notification -> Option to reset the game.

Signature Design Concept

The homepage of the "emerald-tic" project will feature an interactive 3D tic-tac-toe board using @react-three/fiber. The board will appear to float in space, with each square lighting up as players hover over them. When a player makes a move, the square will animate with a smooth transition, flipping to reveal the player's mark. The background will subtly change colors based on the game's progress, creating an immersive experience. Players can rotate the board by dragging, adding a dynamic element to the traditional game.

Interaction Model & Motion Direction

The interaction model for the "emerald-tic" landing page will be "animated". The game board will feature hover transitions and spring physics for interactive elements, providing a polished and engaging user experience. Internal pages will maintain a "static" interaction model to ensure clarity and focus on gameplay.

Non-Functional Requirements

  • The application must load within 3 seconds on standard broadband connections.
  • The game should be responsive and function correctly on all modern web browsers.
  • The system should handle up to 100 concurrent games without performance degradation.

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React for Web
  • Backend: Python with FastAPI
  • Database: Not applicable for this project as it is a simple game without persistent data storage.

Assumptions and Constraints

  • The game will be played on desktop and mobile web browsers.
  • No user authentication or persistent data storage is required.
  • The application will not support AI or single-player modes.

Glossary

  • Player: A user participating in the tic-tac-toe game.
  • Game Board: The 3x3 grid where players place their marks.
  • Mark: The symbol (X or O) used by players to claim a square on the game board.
