dawn-billing System Requirements Document

1. Introduction

The "dawn-billing" project is designed to streamline and enhance the billing processes for supermarkets. This document outlines the system requirements necessary to develop a robust billing application tailored for the supermarket industry in India.

2. System Overview

The dawn-billing application aims to provide a comprehensive billing solution that integrates seamlessly with supermarket operations. It will facilitate efficient transaction processing, inventory management, and customer relationship management, ensuring a smooth checkout experience for both customers and staff.

3. Functional Requirements as Story Points

  • As a Cashier, I should be able to scan items and generate a bill for customers.
  • As a Store Manager, I should be able to view daily sales reports.
  • As a Customer, I should be able to receive an itemized receipt via email.
  • As an Inventory Manager, I should be able to update stock levels in real-time.
  • As a System Administrator, I should be able to manage user access and permissions.
  • As a Customer, I should be able to apply discount codes during checkout.
  • As a Store Manager, I should be able to set up promotional pricing for specific items.
  • As a Cashier, I should be able to process multiple payment methods, including cash, credit, and digital wallets.

4. User Personas

  • Cashier: Responsible for processing customer purchases and handling transactions.
  • Store Manager: Oversees store operations, manages staff, and analyzes sales data.
  • Customer: Purchases goods and services from the supermarket.
  • Inventory Manager: Manages stock levels and ensures product availability.
  • System Administrator: Manages system configurations and user access.

5. Core User Flows

  • Cashier Process: Scan items -> Apply discounts -> Process payment -> Print receipt -> Email receipt to customer.
  • Inventory Update: Check stock levels -> Update inventory -> Generate restock alerts -> Approve restock orders.
  • Sales Reporting: Access sales dashboard -> Select date range -> View sales summary -> Export report.
  • Promotional Setup: Define promotion -> Set discount parameters -> Activate promotion -> Monitor sales impact.

6. Visuals Colors and Theme

  • primary: #2E86C1 (a calming blue to represent trust and reliability)
  • primary_light: #AED6F1 (a lighter tint of blue for hover states)
  • secondary: #F39C12 (a vibrant orange for energy and attention)
  • accent: #E74C3C (a bold red for call-to-action elements)
  • highlight: #F4D03F (a bright yellow for notifications and active indicators)
  • bg: #F8F9F9 (a neutral light grey for the background)
  • surface: #FFFFFF (pure white for cards and panels)
  • text: #212F3C (a dark blue-grey for primary text)
  • text_muted: #566573 (a softer grey for secondary text)
  • border: #D5D8DC (a subtle grey for borders)

7. Signature Design Concept

Interactive Shopping Cart Experience: The homepage will feature an interactive shopping cart animation. As users scroll, items will dynamically appear in the cart, showcasing the seamless addition of products during a shopping trip. This will be achieved using motion/react for smooth animations and transitions. Users can click on items to view details, drag them to rearrange, and see real-time updates on the total bill. The cart will have a 3D-like effect, giving depth and engagement to the experience.

Landing Hero Motion Brief

The hero section will depict a customer journey: a shopping basket fills with products as the user scrolls, each item representing a category (e.g., fruits, vegetables, dairy). The basket will transform into a checkout counter, illustrating the billing process. This loop will last 10 seconds, with interactive elements allowing users to hover over items for more information. The animation will be responsive, maintaining clarity on all devices, and will settle into a static image of a satisfied customer leaving the store with their purchases.

8. Interaction Model & Motion Direction

  • Intended Interaction Model: Parallax
    • The landing page will use a parallax effect to create a sense of depth as users scroll through different sections. Background elements will move slower than foreground content, enhancing the storytelling aspect of the billing process.
  • Internal Pages: Static
    • Internal pages such as dashboards and reports will prioritize clarity and minimal motion to ensure data is easily accessible and readable.

9. Non-Functional Requirements

  • The system must support high transaction volumes typical of a supermarket environment.
  • The application should ensure data security and comply with local data protection regulations.
  • The system must be scalable to accommodate future growth and additional features.

10. Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React for Web
  • Backend: FastAPI
  • Database: MySQL or MariaDB, using Alembic for migrations
  • Local Orchestration: Docker, docker-compose
  • Server-side Orchestration: Kubernetes

11. Assumptions and Constraints

  • The application will primarily serve supermarkets in India, with INR as the default currency.
  • The system should operate within the IST timezone.
  • Internet connectivity is assumed to be stable for real-time operations.

12. Glossary

  • IST: Indian Standard Time
  • INR: Indian Rupee
  • RDBMS: Relational Database Management System
  • UI: User Interface
  • UX: User Experience

This document outlines the requirements for the dawn-billing project, ensuring a comprehensive and efficient billing solution for supermarkets.
