crystal-bot

byTonya Eberhart

A website that in the beginning only needs to be a place to write articles, gather emails, and a place where people can email me if they want to chat. I will likely use substack content and my website content with slight changes, as appropriate. Here's my description in SubStack:I explore the science and stories of becoming—how we learn, change, find hope, and create meaningful lives. I've always been fascinated by the human mind—not simply because it's interesting, but because the way we think shapes the way we learn, hope, love, struggle, and ultimately become who we are. That curiosity has taken me through a PhD in education, years of teaching and coaching, research into hope, goal-setting, behavior change, and social-emotional learning, and an ongoing study of psychology, Buddhism, happiness, and lifelong learning. Along the way, I've become just as interested in the questions as the answers: Why do our brains cling to familiar patterns? How do habits become part of our identity? What helps people grow after adversity? Can happiness be cultivated? How do we continue becoming throughout our lives? To me, becoming isn't about chasing a "better" version of ourselves. It's the lifelong process of learning, questioning, adapting, and growing with greater understanding of ourselves, one another, and the world we share. I've learned that none of us exists in isolation. We are shaped by our experiences, relationships, culture, opportunities, challenges, and the stories we tell ourselves. Yet we also have an extraordinary capacity to learn, adapt, and choose new directions. Understanding how the mind works doesn't erase life's difficulties, but it can help us meet them with greater wisdom, compassion, and intention. The most meaningful lessons haven't come only from research. They've also come from being a wife and mother to two daughters, whose lives have broadened my understanding of identity, family, and the many ways we experience the world; living with chronic pain while continuing to run; tending a garden; getting lost in good books; and discovering that life asks us to participate fully, even when it isn't unfolding the way we planned. Here you'll find essays that blend research with real life. Some begin with a scientific study, others with a conversation, a run, a book, or a quiet morning in the garden. Together, we'll explore what it means to learn deeply, think more clearly, cultivate hope, navigate change, and continue becoming through every season of life. I don't expect us to arrive at perfect answers. I do hope we'll ask better questions, challenge our assumptions, and occasionally see ourselves—and one another—in a new light. If you're endlessly curious, enjoy thoughtful conversations, and believe that becoming is a lifelong practice, I think you'll feel at home here. I hope you'll join the conversation.

crystal-bot

Introduction

The "crystal-bot" project is designed to create an engaging online platform where users can explore the science and stories of personal growth and learning. This platform will serve as a hub for articles, discussions, and email interactions, fostering a community of thoughtful individuals interested in lifelong learning and personal development.

System Overview

The crystal-bot platform will initially focus on providing a space for article publication, email collection, and user interaction through email. It will integrate content from SubStack and other sources, offering a blend of research and real-life experiences. The platform will cater to users who are curious, enjoy thoughtful conversations, and view personal growth as a lifelong journey.

Functional Requirements

  • As a User, I should be able to read articles that blend research with real-life experiences.
  • As a User, I should be able to subscribe to an email list to receive updates and newsletters.
  • As a User, I should be able to send emails to the platform owner for discussions or inquiries.
  • As a User, I should be able to participate in discussion forums to engage with other users.
  • As a User, I should be able to receive book recommendations based on the platform's content.
  • As an Admin, I should be able to publish articles on the platform.
  • As an Admin, I should be able to respond to comments and discussions.
  • As an Admin, I should be able to manage the email list for newsletters and updates.

User Personas

  • Sarah (or Michael): Aged 42–68, enjoys reading and listening to podcasts, highlights book passages, holds or desires a graduate degree, enjoys discussing ideas, and seeks wisdom over quick fixes. She values research combined with humanity and desires a thinking companion rather than a guru.

Core User Flows

  • User visits the website -> reads articles -> subscribes to the email list -> participates in discussion forums -> receives book recommendations.
  • Admin logs into the backend -> publishes new articles -> manages comments and discussions -> updates the email list.

Visuals Colors and Theme

  • primary: #4A90E2 (a deep blue for a calm and trustworthy feel)
  • primary_light: #A6C8F0 (a lighter blue for hover states)
  • secondary: #F5A623 (a warm amber for emphasis and links)
  • accent: #E94E77 (a vibrant pink for CTAs and active states)
  • highlight: #F8E71C (a bright yellow for notifications and active indicators)

Signature Design Concept

The homepage of crystal-bot will feature an interactive "Mind Map" concept. Users will see a dynamic, animated map of interconnected nodes representing different topics and articles. As users hover over a node, it will expand to reveal a brief summary and related articles. Clicking a node will smoothly transition the user to the full article page. This concept will be implemented using @react-three/fiber for 3D interactions and framer-motion for smooth transitions and animations. The map will visually represent the interconnectedness of ideas and encourage exploration.

Interaction Model & Motion Direction

The landing page will utilize a "parallax" interaction model, creating a layered depth effect as users scroll. Atmospheric elements like floating particles and distant shapes will move at different speeds, enhancing the storytelling aspect of the platform. Internal pages, such as article and discussion pages, will adopt a "static" model for clarity and ease of reading.

Non-Functional Requirements

  • The platform must be responsive and accessible across various devices and screen sizes.
  • The system should ensure data privacy and secure handling of user information.
  • The platform should support high availability and scalability to accommodate growing user engagement.

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React for Web
  • Backend: Python with FastAPI
  • Database: MySQL or MariaDB, using Alembic for migrations
  • AI Tools: Not applicable at this stage
  • Orchestration: Docker and docker-compose for local development

Assumptions and Constraints

  • The platform will initially focus on content delivery and user interaction without advanced features.
  • The system will integrate with existing content platforms like SubStack for content sharing.
  • The platform will prioritize user privacy and data security.

Glossary

  • Admin: The person responsible for managing content and user interactions on the platform.
  • User: An individual visiting the platform to read articles, participate in discussions, and engage with the community.
  • Mind Map: An interactive visual representation of interconnected topics and articles on the platform.
