MapleOS System Requirements Document

1. Introduction

MapleOS is a project aimed at developing a secure and innovative mobile operating system specifically designed for Canadian children. The goal is to provide a safe, compliant, and engaging digital environment that aligns with Canadian laws and standards. This document outlines the system requirements for MapleOS, ensuring it meets the unique needs of Canadian families while offering a distinctive user experience.

2. System Overview

MapleOS is envisioned as a comprehensive mobile operating system tailored for children, emphasizing safety, security, and compliance with Canadian regulations. The system will incorporate advanced parental controls, educational content, and a user-friendly interface. It will be designed to work seamlessly with Samsung devices, leveraging partnerships to enhance its reach and functionality.

3. Functional Requirements

  • As a Parent, I should be able to set time limits for app usage to manage my child's screen time.
  • As a Parent, I should be able to monitor my child's app activity to ensure safe usage.
  • As a Parent, I should be able to approve or block app installations to control the content accessible to my child.
  • As a Child, I should be able to access educational content tailored to my age group to support my learning.
  • As a Child, I should be able to customize my home screen with themes and widgets to express my personality.
  • As an Administrator, I should be able to update the OS remotely to ensure all devices are running the latest version.
  • As a Developer, I should be able to integrate third-party educational apps into the OS to expand its offerings.
  • As a Compliance Officer, I should be able to generate reports on data usage and privacy compliance to ensure adherence to Canadian laws.

4. User Personas

  • Parent: Concerned about their child's digital safety and looking for tools to manage and monitor device usage.
  • Child: A young user who wants to explore and learn through digital content while enjoying a personalized experience.
  • Administrator: Responsible for maintaining and updating the OS across devices.
  • Developer: Interested in creating or integrating apps that enhance the educational and entertainment value of the OS.
  • Compliance Officer: Ensures that the OS complies with all relevant Canadian laws and regulations.

5. Core User Flows

  • Parent sets up device -> Configures parental controls -> Monitors usage -> Adjusts settings as needed
  • Child logs in -> Accesses educational apps -> Customizes home screen -> Receives notifications for time limits
  • Administrator logs into the management console -> Deploys OS updates -> Monitors device health
  • Developer accesses SDK -> Integrates new app -> Tests app functionality -> Submits app for approval
  • Compliance Officer reviews data logs -> Generates compliance reports -> Updates privacy settings

  • primary_light: #E8F0FE (Light Maple Blue)
  • secondary: #FF7043 (Autumn Orange)
  • accent: #FFD700 (Maple Gold)
  • highlight: #FFB300 (Harvest Amber)
  • bg: #FFFFFF (Snow White)

7. Signature Design Concept

The MapleOS homepage will feature an interactive "Maple Forest" theme. Users will navigate through a virtual forest where each tree represents a different app or feature. As users hover over a tree, it will animate with falling leaves and a gentle sway, inviting interaction. Clicking on a tree will "zoom in" to reveal the app's details and options. The forest will change colors with the seasons, providing a dynamic and engaging experience. This concept will be implemented using @react-three/fiber for 3D interactions and gsap for smooth animations.

8. Interaction Model & Motion Direction

The landing page will utilize a "parallax" interaction model, creating a layered depth effect as users scroll through the content. Decorative elements like floating leaves and distant mountains will move at different speeds, enhancing the storytelling aspect. Internal pages will adopt a "static" model to prioritize clarity and ease of use, especially for settings and parental controls.

9. Non-Functional Requirements

  • The system must comply with Canadian privacy laws, including PIPEDA.
  • The OS should support seamless updates without disrupting user experience.
  • The system should be optimized for performance on Samsung devices.
  • The OS must provide robust security features to protect user data.

10. Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React for Web
  • Backend: Python, FastAPI
  • Database: MySQL or MariaDB, using alembic for migrations
  • AI Models: GPT 5.4 for user-friendly responses
  • AI Tools: Litellm for LLM Routing
  • Local Orchestration: Docker, docker-compose
  • Server-side Orchestration: Kubernetes

11. Assumptions and Constraints

  • The OS will initially target Samsung devices, with potential expansion to other manufacturers.
  • The system must be designed to scale as user adoption increases.
  • All features must be developed with a focus on child safety and parental control.

12. Glossary

  • PIPEDA: Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act
  • SDK: Software Development Kit
  • OS: Operating System
  • LLM: Large Language Model

This document provides a comprehensive overview of the requirements for MapleOS, ensuring it meets the needs of Canadian families while offering a unique and engaging user experience.
