IRCTC Website System Requirements Document

Introduction

The IRCTC Website project aims to redesign and modernize the existing web platform, enhancing user experience, accessibility, performance, scalability, and security while preserving all existing business functionalities. The platform will cater exclusively to users in India, providing a modern, responsive, and intuitive interface for millions of users while supporting existing railway reservation workflows and related services.

System Overview

The IRCTC Website will be a comprehensive platform designed to facilitate railway reservations and related services for users in India. The system will feature a modernized user interface, improved booking journey, enhanced performance, and robust security measures. It will maintain all existing functionalities while ensuring a mobile-first responsive design and improved system reliability during peak traffic periods.

Functional Requirements

As a User, I should be able to search for trains by source and destination.
As a User, I should be able to select travel dates and view available trains.
As a User, I should be able to filter trains by class, quota, and other preferences.
As a User, I should be able to register and create an account.
As a User, I should be able to log in using OTP and Aadhaar verification.
As a User, I should be able to book tickets and select seat preferences.

User searches for trains -> selects travel dates -> applies filters -> views available options -> selects train -> enters passenger details -> selects seat preferences -> makes payment -> receives booking confirmation.
User logs in -> views dashboard -> checks upcoming trips -> downloads ticket -> tracks PNR status.

Signature Design Concept

The IRCTC Website will feature an interactive "Journey Map" on the homepage. Users will see a dynamic map of India with animated train routes. Hovering over a route will display real-time train information, and clicking on a route will zoom into a detailed view of the train's journey, including stops and timings. This interactive map will be built using @react-three/fiber for 3D visualization and gsap for smooth animations, providing an engaging and informative experience for users.

Interaction Model & Motion Direction

The landing page will utilize a "parallax" interaction model, creating a layered depth effect as users scroll through the page. Decorative elements such as train icons and route lines will move at different speeds, enhancing the storytelling aspect of the platform. Internal pages will adopt a "static" interaction model to prioritize clarity and speed for data-heavy content.

Non-Functional Requirements

The system must support high concurrent user traffic, especially during peak booking periods.
The platform must comply with data privacy and accessibility standards specific to India.
The website should load within 3 seconds on average internet connections in India.
