HVAC Field Calculator
1. Introduction
The HVAC Field Calculator is designed to assist both HVAC technicians and homeowners in estimating the proper BTU requirements for cooling a room or home. This tool is optimized for SEO, lead generation, and mobile users, providing a professional and user-friendly experience.
2. System Overview
The HVAC Field Calculator is a web-based application that calculates the recommended BTU range, estimated AC tonnage equivalent, and suggested system size based on user inputs. It provides energy efficiency recommendations and alerts users if the calculated system size is oversized or undersized. The application also includes lead generation features and SEO content to enhance visibility and user engagement.

3. Functional Requirements
- As a homeowner, I should be able to input room dimensions, number of windows, sun exposure, insulation quality, number of occupants, climate zone, and property type to calculate BTU requirements.
- As an HVAC technician, I should be able to toggle between Imperial and Metric unit systems for input measurements.
- As a user, I should receive a display of the recommended BTU range, estimated AC tonnage equivalent, and suggested system size.
- As a user, I should receive a warning if the calculated system size is oversized or undersized.
- As a user, I should receive energy efficiency recommendations based on the calculation.
- As a user, I should be able to view a summary card, detailed calculation breakdown, explanation of factors used, and recommended next steps on the result page.
- As a user, I should be able to print, save, and share the results.
- As a user, I should be able to input ZIP code, project type, timeline, and contact information for lead generation purposes.
- As a user, I should be able to access SEO content such as "What is a BTU?", "How many BTUs do I need?", common sizing mistakes, AC sizing chart by square footage, FAQ section, and related calculators.
- As a user, I should be able to navigate through SEO-friendly URLs, dynamic title tags, dynamic meta descriptions, FAQ schema, calculator schema, breadcrumbs, and internal linking.
- As a user, I should experience a mobile-first, fast-loading, contractor-friendly, and modern professional design with a large Calculate button and clear results presentation.
- As a user, I should see a disclaimer stating that results are estimates only and should be verified by a licensed HVAC professional.
4. User Personas
- Homeowner: Individuals looking to estimate the BTU requirements for their homes to ensure proper cooling and energy efficiency.
- HVAC Technician: Professionals who require precise calculations to recommend and install appropriate HVAC systems for residential or commercial properties.
5. Core User Flows
- Homeowner inputs room details -> selects sun exposure and insulation quality -> chooses climate zone and property type -> toggles unit system -> calculates BTU -> views results and recommendations -> prints/saves/shares results.
- HVAC Technician inputs room details -> selects sun exposure and insulation quality -> chooses climate zone and property type -> toggles unit system -> calculates BTU -> views detailed breakdown and recommendations -> prints/saves/shares results.

7. Signature Design Concept
The homepage of the HVAC Field Calculator will feature an interactive blueprint aesthetic. Users will see a digital blueprint of a house, where they can click on different rooms to input dimensions and other details. As users hover over different sections, the blueprint will animate, showing potential HVAC system placements and airflow patterns. This interactive experience will be built using @react-three/fiber for 3D effects and framer-motion for smooth animations. The blueprint will dynamically update as users input data, providing a visual representation of their calculations.

8. Interaction Model & Motion Direction
The landing page will utilize a "parallax" interaction model, creating a layered depth effect as users scroll. Decorative elements such as blueprint lines and HVAC system icons will move at different speeds, enhancing the storytelling aspect. Internal pages will adopt a "static" model for clarity and ease of use, focusing on data entry and result presentation.
9. Non-Functional Requirements
- The application must load within 3 seconds on mobile devices.
- The system should handle up to 10,000 concurrent users.
- Data submissions for lead generation must be securely stored and encrypted.
- The application should be accessible and comply with WCAG 2.1 standards.
10. Tech Stack
- Frontend: React for Web
- Backend: Python with FastAPI
- Database: MySQL
- AI Tools: Not applicable
- Local orchestration: Docker
- Server-side orchestration: Kubernetes

11. Assumptions and Constraints
- The application will primarily serve users in the US, considering local climate zones and property types.
- The system will not support HVAC system installation; it is purely for estimation and lead generation.
- The application will not provide real-time HVAC system availability or pricing.
12. Glossary
- BTU: British Thermal Unit, a measure of heat energy.
- HVAC: Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
- SEO: Search Engine Optimization.
- AC: Air Conditioning.
- CFM: Cubic Feet per Minute, a measure of airflow.
