SU(5) Grand Unification
SU(5) is the simplest Lie group that contains the Standard Model gauge groups. Its spontaneous symmetry breaking yields the electroweak and strong forces, predicting proton decay and explaining charge quantization. The running of coupling constants unifies at ~2×10¹⁶ GeV.
Connection to E₈ Geometry
The E₈ root system exhibits icosahedral symmetry, linking exceptional Lie algebras to quasicrystal structures. In certain compactifications, E₈ provides a natural framework for gauge coupling unification and fermion generations.
The one-loop RGEs for gauge couplings g₁, g₂, g₃ are governed by the β-functions: β(g) = −(b₀ g³)/(16π²). In SU(5), the gauge boson transformation to the adjoint 24 breaks to the Standard Model via a Higgs in the 24 representation. The resulting mass splitting yields the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses.
